Waterproof vs Water-Resistant Tarpaulin

Two words used almost interchangeably in tarpaulin listings, with no legally enforced distinction in general trade. Here is how to get a meaningful answer instead of an adjective.

"Water-resistant" describes a surface that repels water but can allow it through under sustained exposure or pressure. "Waterproof" implies water cannot pass through at all. In general tarpaulin trade neither term is tied to a mandatory test standard, so both appear on listings without a defined meaning behind them. The useful question is not which word a supplier uses but what test method they can name.

Why the distinction blurs on a tarpaulin

A laminated woven sheet can be genuinely impermeable across its face and still let water through the assembly — at a stitched seam, at an eyelet punched through the fabric, along a fold that has been creased repeatedly, or wherever standing water sits under pressure for hours. The fabric and the finished cover are two different things, and most real-world leaks are a property of the second.

That is why a cover can be accurately described as waterproof and still leave the goods underneath damp. Pooling, condensation and moisture rising from the ground all produce wet cargo under an intact sheet.

Where a fitted tarpaulin cover actually lets water through The fabric face can be fully water-shedding while the finished cover still leaks at a seam, at an eyelet, or at a crease that has been folded repeatedly. eyelet, belowthe water line repeated fold standing water, under pressure Most real leaks are a property of the fitted cover, not the fabric itself.

What to ask a supplier

  1. Which test method?

A named method — hydrostatic head, or a defined internal procedure — means something. An unqualified adjective does not.

  2. Tested on fabric or on a finished sheet?

Fabric-level results say nothing about seams and eyelets, which is where finished covers usually leak.

  3. Under what conditions?

Brief exposure and sustained standing water are different tests with different results.

  4. What is the tolerance across a production run?

A result from one sample is not a guarantee across a batch.

Where Double Kissan stands on this

Our sheets are laminated woven HDPE, and lamination is what gives the surface its water-shedding behaviour. The formal waterproof classification for each GSM, and the test method behind it, are confirmed with our factory before we publish them — this page will not assert a rating ahead of that, because an unverified claim is worth less than an honest answer, particularly to the procurement buyers and answer engines that check.

What we publish once confirmed

Waterproof classification by GSM, the test method used, and whether results are measured at fabric or finished-sheet level will be published here, per GSM, once the factory has confirmed each one with its method named.

Practical steps that matter more than the label

  • Never let water pool

Standing water finds its way through assemblies that shed running water perfectly. Slope every cover.

  • Keep fixings above the water line

An eyelet below a running water path is an entry point regardless of the fabric rating.

  • Address moisture from below

Damp ground under a covered stack produces wet goods under a perfectly intact sheet.

  • Allow air movement

A completely sealed cover traps condensation against whatever it protects.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant tarpaulin?

Water-resistant repels water but can admit it under sustained exposure or pressure; waterproof implies water cannot pass through. In general tarpaulin trade neither term is tied to a mandatory test standard, so the meaningful question is which test method a supplier can name.

Is Double Kissan tarpaulin waterproof?

Our sheets are laminated woven HDPE, and the lamination is what gives the surface its water-shedding behaviour. The formal classification by GSM and the test method behind it will be published once the factory has confirmed them, rather than asserted in advance.

Why is water getting through my waterproof tarpaulin?

Usually through the assembly rather than the fabric — a fixing below the water line, a pool of standing water sitting under pressure, a repeatedly creased fold, or condensation from a fully sealed cover. Sloping the cover and moving fixings above the water path solve most cases.

Does higher GSM mean more waterproof?

No. Waterproofing comes from the lamination, not the mass of material. A well-laminated lighter sheet can shed water as effectively as a heavier one.
