HDPE vs PVC Tarpaulin: What's the Difference?

Two different materials solving overlapping problems. Double Kissan manufactures HDPE, and this page explains honestly where PVC is the better answer.

HDPE tarpaulin is woven from high-density polyethylene tapes and then laminated, producing a light, economical sheet that is easy to handle at large sizes. PVC tarpaulin is a base fabric coated with polyvinyl chloride, producing a heavier, more flexible and generally more durable sheet at a higher price. HDPE dominates general-purpose covering in India on weight and cost; PVC is chosen where a cover must be heavy-duty, long-lived and repairable.

How each one is made

HDPE sheets start as polyethylene extruded into flat tapes, which are woven into a fabric on looms and then laminated on one or both faces. The weave gives the sheet its strength; the lamination gives it its water-shedding surface.

PVC sheets start from a base fabric — commonly polyester — which is then coated or laminated with PVC. The coating is thicker and more flexible than an HDPE lamination, and it bonds into the fabric rather than sitting on it.

Construction cross-section: HDPE woven and laminated, compared with PVC coated fabric HDPE is a woven tape layer with a thinner lamination bonded over it. PVC is a base fabric with a thicker PVC coating bonded into it. HDPE woven (Double Kissan) woven HDPE tape + thin lamination on top PVC coated base fabric, coated on one or both faces Lighter construction (HDPE) vs. heavier, more flexible construction (PVC) — not a judgement of which is better.

When HDPE is the right answer

  • Large areas need covering and cost per square metre is a real constraint.
  • Covers are handled frequently, often by one person.
  • The cover is seasonal or project-length rather than a permanent asset.
  • Many covers are needed across a site, fleet or farm.

When PVC is the right answer

  • The cover is a long-term fitted asset rather than a consumable.
  • It must stay flexible in cold conditions or fold repeatedly without cracking.
  • It needs to be repaired by welding rather than replaced.
  • A specification names PVC or a coated fabric explicitly.

Comparing GSM across the two

A 200 GSM HDPE sheet and a 200 GSM PVC sheet are not equivalent products. GSM measures material mass per square metre and nothing else, so it is only a meaningful comparison within the same material and construction. Comparing GSM figures across materials is one of the more common ways buyers reach a wrong conclusion.

Our position, stated plainly

Double Kissan manufactures HDPE woven tarpaulin. Where a requirement genuinely calls for a coated PVC fabric, HDPE is not the right substitute, and we would rather say so than sell against the requirement. Where the job is general-purpose covering at scale, HDPE is what most Indian buyers use, and it is what we make.

Frequently asked questions

Is HDPE or PVC tarpaulin better?

Neither is better in the abstract. HDPE is lighter, cheaper and easier to handle at large sizes, which suits general-purpose and high-volume covering. PVC is heavier, more flexible, longer-lived and weldable, which suits long-term fitted covers and specialist requirements.

Is HDPE tarpaulin waterproof?

HDPE woven fabric is laminated to give a water-shedding surface. The exact waterproof classification for Double Kissan sheets, and the test method behind it, are published only once the factory has confirmed them, with the method named.

Can you compare HDPE and PVC by GSM?

Not usefully. GSM measures material mass per square metre, so it is only comparable within the same material and construction. A 200 GSM HDPE sheet and a 200 GSM PVC sheet are different products.

Which is cheaper, HDPE or PVC tarpaulin?

HDPE is generally the lower-cost material for a given size, which is a large part of why it dominates general-purpose covering in India.
